WHAT IS OHS?:
It involves identifying and managing risks to the health and safety of employees and other people who may be affected by the work being carried out.
Occupational health and safety is important for many reasons, including legal compliance, protecting employees from harm, reducing absenteeism, and improving productivity.
Employers have a duty of care to provide a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. This includes identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing control measures to reduce or eliminate risks. Control measures may include providing personal protective equipment, implementing safe work procedures, and providing training and supervision.
Workplace hazards can be physical, chemical, biological, or psychological in nature.
Physical hazards include things like noise, vibration, and manual handling, while chemical hazards may include exposure to toxic substances.
Biological hazards may include exposure to infectious diseases, while psychological hazards may include stress and workplace bullying.
To manage OHS risks effectively, it is essential to have a strong safety culture within the workplace. A safety culture is characterized by a shared commitment to safety, open communication, and a willingness to learn and improve.
This can be fostered through regular training and education, consultation with employees, and the involvement of employees in safety initiatives.
In addition to managing risks, businesses also have a responsibility to respond effectively to workplace accidents and incidents.
This may include providing first aid and medical treatment, reporting incidents to relevant authorities, and investigating the causes of incidents to prevent them from happening again in the future.
Overall, occupational health and safety is an essential part of any workplace. By identifying and managing hazards and risks, businesses can protect their employees from harm and create a safe and healthy working environment. A strong safety culture is key to achieving this, and regular training and education are important in maintaining this culture over time.
